Background

Work

Jim spent the 1980s on a quest for fame and fortune in the music business. After failing to become the Next Big Thing, he threw his synthesiser away at the age of 30, choosing instead to use the computing skills picked up via computer automation in the recording studio to found Pandora Ltd. The company was a small software house producing software utilities used by musicians to control the new generation of MIDI synthesisers and drum machines. In 1991 Jim moved to a design engineering position at VideoLogic, which subsequently became Imagination Technologies. He then moved into the field of graphics chip design and simulation, and worked on the CLX graphics device for the Sega Dreamcast, and several other Sega arcade systems including the model 3. Jim also worked on the initial design for the MBX graphics chip, which was later adopted by apple for a little known device called the iPhone.

Searching for a different challenge in 2003, he co-founded Email Systems with Neil Hammerton as technical architect and software engineer, and after the company merged with Webroot, he co-founded Natterbox with his colleagues to revolutionise voice communications. As co-founder & CTA of Natterbox, Jim is responsible for the global system design and researching new technologies.

Life

Jim spends his free time indulging his passions for aviation, classic cars, be they ancient or modern, and film noir. He spends more time than he would like coming up with excuses to avoid extreme cycling trips with Neil. He is working his way toward an ambition to fly a jet at Mach 2, and has a clear sense of social responsibility, saying that he intends to leave the planet in a better state that it was when he arrived.
